At the end of May, two conferences took place in Brussels, both dedicated to energy efficiency and showing that the latter is essential to reduce energy consumption and Europe's dependency of energy imports.
Energy Commissioner Oettinger emphasized the importance of a European energy policy and defended measures such as the ecodesign directive which aims to reduce energy consumption by setting minimum energy efficiency requirements.
For heating, cooling and refrigeration, energy efficiency offers enormous economic potential. For example, 80% of the energy in buildings is consumed by heating and cooling. The EPBD takes this into account and will be revised in 2015. In the framework of ecodesign, the European Commission is currently developing minimum efficiency requirements for chillers, VRF systems and condensing units.
